In this paper Clarence Leuba has brought together some findings of scientific research helpful in answering the question "What is the essential nature of man?" by summarizing the findings of scientific research. Leuba not only offers a description of the "natural man," but he demonstrates the use by the modern psychologist of scientific researches which relate to his problems. Here the author has turned to the systematic observations of chimpanzees in the field and in controlled breeding and laboratory centers; he includes the reports on children, seemingly raised by animals, who subsequently came under human scrutiny; and he reviews the reports of anthropologists who have studied primitive (more correctly designated nonliterate) cultures throughout the world.

"The Works of Blumenbach edited in this volume are the first and third or last edition of his famous Treatise On the Natural Variety of Mankind; which were published in 1775 and 1795 respectively: the Contributions to Natural History, in two parts; and a slight notice of three skulls which appeared in the Gottingische gelehrte Anzeigen of Nov. 1833, only remarkable for being the last printed utterance of the author. Two Memoirs of Blumenbach have been prefixed, which contain together almost everything of interest concerning the circumstances of his life. I have also added an account of his once famous anthropological collection, written by his successor, now himself lately deceased, Professor Rudolph Wagner, one of the original Honorary Fellows of the Anthropological Society, London. Blumenbach has related in the little autobiographical fragment, which has been incorporated by Marx in his memoir, the causes which led to his selection of an anthropological subject as the thesis for his doctoral dissertation"--Preface. The data of physical anthropology continues to enlarge and accumulate at an accelerating rate. The nine years that have elapsed since the publication of the second edition in 1951 has witnessed some striking developments which have led to the re-evaluation of many once-solidly entrenched ideas. There has been a healthy shift of interest away from the statics of the subject to a dynamic functional approach. This is particularly evident in the micro-evolutionary studies of human populations which have begun to make their appearance. The call for a new edition has enabled me to incorporate some of these changes in the present volume. A great portion of the book has been rewritten, and many new illustrations, tables, and references added. As in the earlier editions it has been my object to make the subject matter of physical anthropology readably comprehensible to the beginning student.
